Ah Fourways.
A land known across the province for one big (empty) mall, a giant hardware shop, and the traffic of seemingly all four corners of Gauteng. They say the famous “why did the chicken cross the road” joke never works there, because the chicken would take 5 working days to find space on the pedestrian crossing. It’s the birthplace of Boets, hoots, and smash and grabs; a mystical land like the Wild West but with less horses, and more horsepower. Fourways, oh Fourways, where “morning rush” becomes “morning wait”, and peak hour extends to midnight.
If you’re a resident of the esteemed Fourways crew, you’ve probably heard “Fibre is coming soon (Boet)” (probably enough times to question whether “soon” refers to next week, or before next World Cup). So, are you getting Fibre or not?
The reality sits somewhere in between. Fourways is vast (as ascertained by the size of Leroy Merlin), populated, and not always cut and dry. It’s actually a connectivity mixed bag. Some streets are spoiled for choice; others stare at empty pavements trying to squeeze the last drop of LTE out of thin air.
The good news? You’ve got options even without Fibre itself.
Let’s Start with Fourways Fibre (if you’re one of the lucky ones):
It’s not all DSTV Doom and Gloom.
Many parts of Fourways, Lonehill, and nearby estates live in eternal Fibre bliss. Providers like Vumatel, OpenServe, and MetroFibre have not abolished the land entirely. Rather, dozens of ISPs offer a variety of packages for both homes and businesses alike.
The catch? Availability can quite literally vary from one side of the street to the other. Which is why we recommend checking your exact address instead of assuming that your neighbour means you can get it too.
Option 2: Home Wireless Internet
No Fibre? No panic.
Modern Wireless has come a long way from the old days, where we’d balance routers on the windowsill and pray for a bar. Today’s Wireless can deliver high speeds with quick installation, and easily handle streaming, remote work, gaming, smart devices and more. Unlike waiting for a trench to tick off the local Karen, you can usually get connected in days.
That’s why for many Fourways residents in Fibre dead-zones (boet), Wireless has become the trusted second option (which doesn’t compromise on quality).
Option 3: LTE and 5G:
Coverage in Fourways is generally strong, although speeds can fluctuate depending on network congestion and exactly where you live. One person’s “blazing fast” can be another person’s “why won’t this Zoom call stop freezing?”
Both of these are solid options, especially for those who:
- Rent
- Need very quick internet connectivity
- Don’t want even a slight installation hassle
- Plan to move in the near future
Unlike the robots, coverage in Fourways is generally strong (although speeds can fluctuate based on congestion and location). One person’s “super-fast” may be another’s “stop freezing” – but 5G in particular is usually quite solid.
How to Choose the Right Internet for Your Home

Ask yourself four simple questions:
1. How many people are using the internet?
A family of four streaming and gaming needs far more bandwidth than a single user checking emails.
2. Do you work from home?
If your salary depends on Teams calls behaving themselves, reliability matters just as much as speed.
3. Are you renting?
A flexible month-to-month wireless solution may make more sense than committing to a long-term installation.
4. Is Fibre actually available at your address?
Not your suburb. Not your estate. Your exact address.
Because in Fourways, the difference between “Fibre available” and “coming soon” can be about 30 metres of missing cable.
So… wait, or find an alternative?
If Fibre is genuinely being installed in your street and it seems like a matter of time, then we’d advise holding out. However, if you’ve been hearing “coming soon” for longer than it takes to cross the dreaded bridge of doom, it may be time to stop waiting and start assessing your options.
Yes, buffering builds character, but only to a point. For everything else? There’s Vox.
