Why choose Satellite?

Our devices connect users by locking onto spot beams instead of full spectrum bandwidth, making our satellite offering highly efficient and very affordable. We are able to offer it at costs that are comparable to terrestrial services.

Special Terms and Conditions

The following conditions apply to Satellite packages

Fair Use Policy (FUP) will be implemented on unlimited service plans according to the soft cap limits. Should utilisation reach a percentage of the allowed bandwidth threshold, the speed will be limited to a percentage of the contracted speed, as Step 1. This methodology can be implemented in more than one step.

  • 10Mbps: Will be throttled to 5Mbps after a 150GB used,3Mbps after 250GB used and 1.5Mbps after 300GB’s used during the monthly data cycle.
  • 20Mbps: Will be throttled to 10Mbps after a 200GB used, 5Mbps after 350GB used and 2Mbps after 400GB’s used during the monthly data cycle.

The Satellite service is a best effort service, which means that it is a shared contended service and throughput speeds are not guaranteed.

There are numerous packages available to choose from. The advertised speeds are maximum ‘burstable’ throughputs. Satellite network capacity planning aims to ensure that during the busiest hours of usage, the throughput over the satellite path does not drop below 30% of the link’s maximum speed. The service is subject to Fair Use Policy of the Satellite network and several factors can influence the throughput speeds.

The Satellite service is a broadband best effort service provided over satellite, with latency around 720ms. This means that it might be not suitable for use of latency sensitive services, which may time out.

The Satellite service does not support Virtual Private Network applications. Customers must therefore familiarise themselves with the implications, and take full responsibility for this scenario.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a high-speed, Always-On Internet access service delivered via Satellite by Vox Telecom.

The service is ideal for any consumer, business or enterprise requiring an affordable high-speed Internet access service – especially where other alternatives aren’t available.

Satellite internet beams data from homes and business premises up into space. A satellite then receives the communication and relays it back to Earth, from where it can be sent to its intended recipient. The service does not depend on terrestrial cabling, which means no long lead times waiting for cables to be installed, or for stolen cables to be replaced.

Satellite uses sophisticated acceleration techniques to enable high-speed performance over high-latency satellite links. Without this feature, TCP connections would only deliver a throughput of around 100Kbps – simply because of the round trip latencies involved over satellite connections.

These acceleration technologies cannot accelerate traffic running inside tunnels. Tunnel payloads are commonly encrypted in any event, making it impossible to analyse the packet payload to attempt acceleration.

When running VPN tunnels over YahClick, customers need to implement their own TCP acceleration system. Otherwise the performance will be limited to around 100Kbps – regardless of service plan being used.

To ensure voice quality, a network connection must support a feature called ‘Quality Of Service (QoS)’ that prioritises voice traffic over normal data traffic (e.g. http, YouTube, torrents, etc.).

If you need to run telephone calls, please ensure that you choose one of the YahClick ‘Voice’ enabled service plans.

These are specifically designed to prioritise voice and supports between one to eight concurrent G.729 encoded voice calls – depending on the service plan selected.

The service is available throughout South Africa. Coverage is delivered via 128 high-power spot-beams, each focused on a specific part of the country, overlapping in some areas.

There are numerous packages that can be selected from. The advertised speeds are maximum “burstable” throughputs.

Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel via to the satellite (about 72000 km), terminate in Europe, breakout to the Internet and on to its destination.

This round trip adds about a 600ms delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with an international Website or host server. The latency to a South African service is almost 800ms (round trip).

The further a customer is located away from the centre of the spot-beam (where signals are the strongest), the weaker the signals become. For sites towards the edges of the beams, we compensate for the ‘weaker’ signal by using a larger dish. The 2 dish sizes being deployed for this service are: 74cm (oval) and 98cm (round) and this is dependent on feasibility.
