Internet for Estates in Centurion: Fibre vs Fixed Wireless
There’s everywhere else in SA, and then there’s Centurion.
It’s an almost mystical place full of manicured lawns and robots without window washing. Where even the sky seems bluer, the air more still, and the hooters less noisy.
When we think of Centurion, we think of estates. Access controlled, body corp regulated, sprawling estates where you have to provide blood samples and a kidney just to get through the gate. Where you’re as likely to see a Deer Crossing sign as you are to get stopped by a security buggy. We’ve heard Elon Musk stayed there, but the truth is nobody knows his real origin story (we suspect a lab). Yeah, Estate Living is the one, alright.
The perks are endless. Quiet streets. Beefed up security. Kids on bicycles without parental heart attacks. The downsides? Reliable Internet isn’t always as straightforward as you’d expect. We’ve looked into it, actually. Some estates in Midstream, Copperleaf, Blue Valley, Amberfield, Monavoni, Raslouw and Kosmosdal have multiple Fibre providers competing for your business. Others have just one. Some newer developments don’t have Fibre installed yet at all (it’s coming though, this is Centurion).
Moving in, or connecting up? Chances are you have two main options: Fibre to the Home, or Fixed Wireless. Let’s break it down:
Fibre: The Golden Goose:
The first question we ask is always; does your estate have Fibre infrastructure? If so, no further questions. Get connected.
Oh, you wanted more info? Here’s why:
- Fast, consistent speeds.
- Low latency, perfect for gaming.
- Reliable working video calls.
- Ultra-smooth streaming (in 4K).
- Capacity for multi-users and smart devices.
If you’re running a busy household (think working, studying, and streaming at the same time) or just want the best connectivity around, you’re fine with Fibre.
But (there’s always a but), What About When Fibre Isn’t Available?
Not every estate has Fibre. Even in Centurion (so what hope do the rest of us have?).
Some newly gated communities are still pending approvals, whilst others remain tied to a specific operator that has yet to complete their rollout (we’d recommend looking into what’s available around The Reeds, Celtisdal, Rooihuiskraal or even parts of Raslouw before signing a contract). You don’t want to move in and expect Gigabit Internet, only to later discover it’s “coming soon” Internet.
So, Where Does Fixed Wireless Make Sense?
It used to be considered borderline obsolete, but Fixed Wireless has made a dramatic comeback these last few years. The difference between Wireless and Fibre is that the former doesn’t rely on underground cables, but rather connects to nearby Wireless infrastructure via specialised equipment. This makes it ideal if:
- Your estate isn’t connected to Fibre yet.
- You’re renting and can’t wait for drawn out installation delays.
- You’ve just moved in and need quick Internet.
- You’re in the Twilight Zone and waiting for future Fibre.
Fixed Wireless, 2026 Edition, is more than capable of handling your Connectivity needs, and makes a perfectly good backup too.
But What About Speed?
Not the YouTuber, mind you, but actual, tangible line speed.
On paper, it’s usually Fibre >>> everyone else. But what reads the fastest isn’t always the fastest in practice. Ask yourself the following:
- How many users will be sharing the bandwidth?
- Does anyone work from home continuously?
- Are there gamers in the house (seriously, modern day cyclists, that lot).
- How many devices (smart TV’s, phones, laptops) will be connecting.
A family of five, for example, will have different needs (and require different speeds) to someone living alone (although if you’re single and affording Centurion rent, can we send you our CV???). Sometimes, it’s about choosing the right speed and not just the highest number.
You See, Reliability Matters (more than advertised Speed)
1000000Mbps matters very little if your connection drops every five minutes. Instead, look for the provider which guarantees the following:
- Reliable Uptime
- Responsive, active customer support
- High-quality equipment
- Flexible packages which can scale (or downscale) according to your needs
Stability is as (if not more) important than chasing the fastest line.
Your pre-moving (or pre-connecting) Checklist:
If you’re linked to a place in Midstream Estate, Midstream Ridge, Copperleaf Golf Estate, Blue Valley Golf Estate, Amberfield Glen, Highveld, Irene, Monavoni or anywhere else in the Centurion region, ask yourself the following:
- Is Fibre installed, or available?
- If not, when is it coming?
- Which network operators are available within the estate?
- Can I choose my preferred ISP?
- Is Fixed Wireless an option (in the absence of Fibre)?
- What are the installation timelines?
- What’s the Vox Sign Up Process 😉
Know the answers upfront. Save yourself the frustration. Let moving day be about other stresses.
Let’s Wrap Up:
If you can get Fibre, then get Fibre. It’s better for the now, and the future.
However, Fixed Wireless is no longer the compromise it used to be. Modern tech can provide a fast and dependable alternative whilst you wait, or as a long-term solution. The key? Choosing the solution which fits your estate, needs, and what your family actually uses.
